Specialist Diploma in Civil Engineering and Project Management
The Specialist Diploma in Civil Engineering and Project Management is designed to prepare learners for a career in the construction industry. Learners will acquire knowledge and skills for practical use in civil engineering and management of all stages of construction and civil engineering projects. The comprehensive curriculum covers subjects such as civil engineering design, construction project management, sustainable building technologies and soil mechanics.
On completion of the course, learners will be able to:
- Solve basic mathematical problems in engineering.
- Produce professional civil engineering designs.
- Explain the importance of soil mechanics in civil engineering.
- Discuss digitalisation in the construction industry.
- Apply health, safety and environmental standards at the workplace.
- Deploy project management skills and knowledge on engineering projects.
- Assess and recommend the suitability of materials for engineering and construction as well as identify their weaknesses through an understanding of material science.
- Explain the principles of structural steel designs.
- Describe the various technologies, principles and practices of green building architecture and sustainable environment.
- Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to develop engineering solutions.
- Engineering Mathematics
This module provides an introduction to basic algebra and mathematical problems in engineering. Learners will study topics such as ordinary differential equations, descriptive statistics, random variables, probability distributions, and linear combinations of random variables.
- Introduction to Civil Engineering Design
The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to the basics of Engineering design, creative problem-solving, design issues and practices in Civil Engineering. Learners will learn how to develop creative designs with the consideration of the existing built environment, natural environment, economic and social factors, and expected life span.
- Soil Mechanics
The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the basic concepts of the mechanics of soils. Learners will study topics such as the nature of soils, soil description and classification, effective stress concept, and elementary seepage and compaction problems.
- Digitalisation in Construction (Building Information Modelling)
This module aims to impart to learners the knowledge and competency to deal with digitalisation in the construction industry. Learners will also learn how to apply the Integrated processes and Digital transformation processes in construction.
- Health, Safety and Environment
In this module, learners will gain a general understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) issues at the workplace in the various industries. Learners will also gain the expertise to manage social, health, environmental and legal issues associated with the built and natural environment.
- Construction Project Management
This module covers the management of the construction project lifecycle which includes stages such as determining clients’ requirements, design, procurement, construction, and final handover. Learners will gain competency and confidence to manage construction projects professionally.
- Strength of a Material
This module provides the learners with the knowledge of the strength of a material and its ability to resist external forces without breaking. Learners will study topics such as elastic and elastic-plastic behaviour; plane stress and strain, failure criteria, stresses in thin-walled pressure vessels, bending and shearing stresses in beams, Mohr’s circle, and deflections of beams.
- Advanced Structural Steel Design
In this module learners will learn the advanced design methodology for steel and composite structures. Learners will study topics such as buckling concepts, plate girder & connection design, framing systems and columns, and design of structural systems.
- Green and Sustainable Building Technologies
This module introduces learners to the various technologies and practices of green building architecture. It provides learners with an insight into sustainable environmental principles and practices. Learners will study topics such as passive and sustainable design, energy auditing and building management.
- Engineering Design and CAD
In this module, learners will learn engineering design concept, freehand sketching, and computer-aided drafting/design. It also provides an introduction to AutoCAD; a useful software for Architectural and Engineering design. Learners will study topics such as 2D drawing, 3D drawing, solid models, text, dimensions, blocks, hatching, and plotting, etc.
This is a capstone project whereby learners will undertake research on a topic related to engineering and produce an individual report.
